This is one of the all time greatest games of all time...ever. I recently ran across it again and it is just as addicting now as it was 14 years ago. It is the absolute perfection of strategy, resource management, and turn based alien slaughter.

You can find it here under it's original Europian name "UFO - Enemy Unknown", in the US it was called "X-COM - UFO Defense":

If you are too young to have played it when it came out, or weren't into computers at the time, you owe it to yourself to sit down and enjoy this gem.

I had a C64, with a tape player no less. Ah, those were the days. It was faster to program your own game of pong that it was to download it from a cassette.

This was the C64 game that addicted me to computer games, dooming me forever to a pasty complexing and squinty eyes.

And of course I register just to conduct some forum necromancy :D

mmm... X-Com!!! Just downloaded Terror From the Deep off of Steam a couple months ago and have been cracking out on it.

Oh, and Kellor, you should give UFO: Extraterrestrials a shot. Can't remember where I found it, but there's an excellent mod that turns UFO: Ex into an almost perfect X-Com 3. Check it out!

And since 2K Games has acquired X-Com, there's been a ton of rumors that 2K Boston, which developed Bioshock, is being tagged to make a new X-Com!

I always enjoyed UFO more than the others. I think it had to do with the sheer randomness that could occur. It seemed like a lot of the dumb luck shots were less common in the other games.

I used to put the missle launcher in the hands of my biggest coward. He would invariably be the one that would shoot the high explosive rocket down a line of four people , through two windows, a door, and nail the sectoid in his big gray orb all the way across the map. Then he would panic, spin three times and run away. I loved that guy.
